Low Presence of Women as Leaders of Research Groups and Project Principal Investigators

Sun 2.4.2017 12:04 pm

The gender assessment internal to the university revealed that female researchers more frequently apply for individual grants, like Marie Curie Individual Fellowships or ERC programs,  but few of them apply as Principal Investigators of collaborative projects with a consortium or a research group to manage and coordinate. This effect is probably the consequence of the low presence of women as full professors and leaders of research groups within academic institutions and departments. Another factor could be the difficulty to balance life and work, that prevents women from applying for research projects requiring a significant overhead in terms of coordination and management.

Which policies and strategies may be designed and implemented to tacke this gender gap in research?
