My solution is simple - if you want to be the master of your time and at the same earn money for your living, you should definitely try to create your own business. A lot of countries are giving goog opportunities to start something up.
Promote networking activities among females
Evaluate (in detail) and improve recruiting processes for female academics (e.g. by making use of EURAXESS best practices)
It is necessary to create a competition mechanism for choose of managers in an organization. On competition should not be affected by gender or age. Everyone (men or women) should have equal opportunities.
Students or young researcher may not plan clearly university / research phases with family phase - it often happens ad hoc
Goal: Raise awarness on life planning and discuss with peers openly how to best handle it
2x 1/2 day workshop with some months between
Exchange openly
Format: brown bag lunch, grab a sandwich and listen to new input, afterwards open discussion, clearify questions
To get the critical mass: organize with different regional institutions, maybe at different locations
Goal: Diversify successful candidates - the alternative to a female quota
Reformat the application material that the following things are invisble to the selection committee regarding a candidate
Increase data and process transparency to better assess the situation of gender equality
> Visualize achievements and gender activities that take place at university
Although women are successful in gaining qualifications, their subsequent careers are often more interrupted, they have lower pay and their careers are flatter. As a consequence, they earn less than men over their life cycle, and their pensions are lower. The gender pay gap is often moving in the opposite direction from the gender employment gap.
By changing the netwokring activities time to a time that the participants are at the University, the parents will not have to commit with a child care taker and the networking will be more efficient and enhanced between people.
Offer financial support for extra hours of childcare (e.g. in case of travel, after work activities, etc.) that staff can use upon request.
Mother caring for her child does end up teaching that child many things. If she works in a university as a professor, she's teaching students. Since the work is, in a sense, analogous (and yet sufficiently different to enable exploration of different perspectives), can't caring for a child be accepted as equivallent to some training, improvement of qualification?
Language is a powerful gun that motivates or crush people. While talking about gender equality, the importance of approperiate language should be remarked. Some of women working in IT field experiences irrespectful or undesarable comments towards women. These comments arises due to various reasons: negative view toward women, stereotypes, cultural approach and many other reasons.
Nowadays, gender equality is more seen as a women's issue. Many actions are focused to help and to involve women to be more active and change the situation of gender inequality at home or in a work place. However, is is not just a women's issue. Men should be encouraged to get involved in advocating for women's equality at work or at home.
Nowadays we cannot imagine the world without information technologies. However, Lithuania’s current state in ICT is quite imbalanced as there barely are any females studying in this sphere. This situation is in need of change, thus several ideas are suggested to make a step forward.
- Create a short promotional video about the Information Systems study programme at the University of Muenster.
- Publish the video on the website of the Department of Information Systems.
- Make the video permanently accessible to ensure sustainability.
- Conduct short interviews with female Information Systems (IS) students and alumni (role models for potential female students).
- Publish the interviews on the website of the Department of Information Systems.
- Make the interviews permanently accessible to ensure sustainability.
- Conduct short interviews with both female and male Information Systems (IS) students and alumni.
- Publish the interviews on the website of the Department of Information Systems.
- Make the interviews permanently accessible to ensure sustainability.
The goal of this idea is to help ISS female students to integrate to the majority of ISS students. More social activities out of study should be organized for ISS students, such as company visit, get together and welcome new ISS students, celebrations and so on. This will also help to change the image of ISS suject, such as not to be perceived as a male-dominated subject.
A solution could be to reinforce the current academic curriculum counseling with activities dedicated to female high school students, aimed at guiding girls towards ICT disciplines.
Workforce diversification is a key component towards prosperous future of the company and asset upraise. But even nowadays, women's opinion sometimes misheard, put off the line, and treated badly. How do we finally eradicate this problem in the years ahead?
Note: Interventions are specific activities aimed at changing a state of affairs (e.g., Craig, 2015).
Organize social advertising with information about IT professions.
It is necessary to intensify the educational work with the entrants to solve this problem. For example, during Summer Schools encourage girls to enroll at computer sciences, and boys - economic sciences.
The presence of summer camps organized by the university and dedicated to female students from high schools may help to promote the participation of women in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) studies. Laboratory activities focused on a learning-by-doing approach are likely to have a two-fold positive effect: 1) smoothly and nicely introduce girls to computer sc
- Establish new ways to promote the Information Systems (IS) study programme during the annual information days for girls (“Girls’ Day”), as well as for all secondary-school students (“Hochschultag”, career fairs).
Since cultural issues and stereotypes are generally recognized to be the main causes of gender inequalities, the countermeasures should involve the younger generations, integrating specific contents into the educational programs of middle or even elementary schools.
- Establish regular (instead of sporadic) visits of surrounding schools.
- Explain during the visits, what Information Systems (IS) is about (interdisciplinary and diverse field), why it is interesting, tell about the benefits and opportunities of the IS profession etc.
It's a kind of a common opinion that boys are good for science, computers and all that technical stuff and at the same time girls are good for bookkeeping, accounting and things that need a diligent, thorough working out.
Our university has a great experience in holding student Olympiads in sports programming of regional and all-Ukrainian level. Mainly men's teams participate in these competitions. We can organize a separate nomination for women's teams at such olympiads.
- Match international students with local students in groups at the beginning of the semester, and encourage them to meet, laugh, talk, listen, and participate in whatever clubs, teams or activities they wish.
Decision making process requires to take a responsibility and have a forsight for future changes and influences. Many organizations to reduce the negative influences that might occur after taking one or another decision, involve its' employees to help in this process. In the IT field, a majority of employees are men, so, the lack of women's insights are notable.
From my point of view there are following possible ways to solve the problem:
1. To organize an events, meetings, speaking corners which will bring the problem to the light. In that way there are possibilities to make a contact with investors, which can help to solve the issue with money.
Creation of a gender committee; protection of rights and interests of faculty members and students on gender equality
This platform can be used for personal and professional networking, for exchange of ideas, advices and problem solving for female staff.
This center will offer support and counseling for gender and diversity related issues, which can be linked with the Gender Commissions.
The goal of this idea is to realize good peer support between employees which can also help promote gender equality in workplace.
The goal of this idea is to help acheive gender equality. Gender equality refers to both female and male. To keep gender equality, both male and female should be promoted.
Goal: the presence of a permanent monitoring system on gender equality would permit to observe the long term effects of choice over years.
- Introduce at the lectures (especially during first semester Bachelor and Master lectures) more short interactive exercises, where student groups are formed in a random way during the lecture directly.
To improve the effectiveness of existing dedicated committees, a clear commitment of the high level management of the university and of the departments is needed, as well as the explicit intent to go beyond the simple fulfillment of bureaucratic and legislative obligations.
While creating a career plan, it is important to include all aspects of life to make it as detailed as possible. However, many women stuggle with this task as they have to consider many aspects that might make influence to their career plans. To help women, SEOs should pay more attention to female employees and their career roadmaps.
The current situation in ICT world is quite imbalanced as there barely are any females working in this sphere. Therefore, it is considered to implement several ideas that would allow to improve it.
- Organise a sensitising workshop/training on communication for academic staff members and professors.
- Invite an external expert to conduct it.
- Include the topics related to gender equality and diversity.
- Provide examples of inappropriate behaviour (e.g., patronising and arrogant treatment towards subordinates) to make the participants reflect on own behaviour.
- Revise the regulations related to gender parity quotas in committees and decision-making bodies.
Note: Implementation of this idea might not be feasible, but the results of voting will be communicated to the Equal Opportunities Office at the University of Muenster (WWU) to be communicated further at the state and country levels.
We need organise seminars and lectures to acknowledge people about gender problems as a part of educational process in schools and universities
People need to understand how to define gender, what are the main problems in it's culture and how to resolve that problems
Goal(s): it proposes to use training to promote social change. In this way, participants will act for explore, analyse and transform the reality in which they are living.
Details of the proposed activities:
Goal: discover existing gender experts within the university and facilitate their collaboration in order to promote synergies between existing initiatives on gender equality.
- Rephrase the current obligatory sentence in the text of job vacancies from “Women will be preferred in case of equal qualification” to, for instance, “Gender cannot act as a factor advantaging or disadvantaging a candidate. The Department of Information Systems is a place without gendered tasks, we believe that all genders can do the same job at our Department.”
- Allow both women and men to become equal opportunities officers.
Note: Implementation of this idea might not be feasible, but the results of voting will be communicated to the Equal Opportunities Office at the University of Muenster (WWU) to be communicated further at the state and country levels.
To increase awareness about gender equality we need to create opportunities for people to physically meet and discuss together about this topic and the related issues. A possible solution is the establishment of dedicated working groups, consisting of members of different departments and with different professional roles within the university.
Yes, indeed among the staff of the university, as well as among students, there is some misunderstanding of the problems associated with gender balances both in the university and in society as a whole.
I believe that it is necessary for the staff of the university and students to organize trainings on which to consider specific gender problems and ways to overcome them
Although women are successful in gaining qualifications, their subsequent careers are often more interrupted, they have lower pay and their careers are flatter. As a consequence, they earn less than men over their life cycle, and their pensions are lower. The gender pay gap is often moving in the opposite direction from the gender employment gap.
I think that it is necessary to hold various events, lectures, master classes, where the organizers will be people who are not ordinary for such activities. For example, a master class on hand-made or a lecture on the upbringing of children should be conducted by a man, and a woman should tell about innovative technologies in the IT sphere.
From my point of view, salary transparency can help eliminate gender pay gaps and play an important role in helping achieve balance.
In my opinion, stereotypes can not be erased, because they are basically created by people who are not very smart and want to self-affirm in this way. These people will be around forever and there is almost certainly no way to change their mind. Even now a lot of people assocciate different groups with old stereotypes because they need these stereotypes to feel better about themselfs.
I think that if it is necessary to get rid of gender stereotypes, first of all it is necessary to change the education system, namely:
1) Through the identification and exclusion from educational programs of any a kind of sexist ideas, that is, related to discrimination on the basis of sex;
1. Goals: provide example and motivation to persons who are under such stereotypes.
2. Orginize meetings with people who has broken this stereotypes to listen their success stories.
3. People who might be influenced by such steriotypes.
4. Does not required.
We know that media (especially movies) draws a wrong picture of girls who are interested in ICT. Usually they are shown as anti-social, having poor communication skills, unable to have good personal relationships, etc. We believe that certain events could be organized for showing that ICT girls are not necessarily like that.
From my point of view, students and graduates should be granted with a government exemption, which will allow students and graduates to establish flexible work schedule, or even to set the workday length for 6 hours instead of 8.
Implementation of the concept of "Family Friendly University"
- Conduct sensitising workshops aimed at raising awareness of decision-makers about the importance of ensuring the work and family life balance of their staff members.
- Discuss during the workshop the strategies to further support staff members with children and dependants.
It would be great if employer can allocate funds on babysitter for their employees (in of case of overtime).
Having help with the child can lighten womens`s load and give them the opportunity to do their job/education properly.
Objectives: This approach enables all participants to manifest themselves regardless of gender
Details: Organize a general competition for all applicants, which enables everyone to show their strengths and weaknesses. Each applicant must prove that he is worthy of this work.
Providing support for parents that struggle to provide adequate care for their children and cannot while working at the universities.
People working at the university and (possibly) students
Men should have oportunity to use maternity leave as women do, in order to allow women to work during the first year after the child was born.
Or they can devide maternity leave between them, so it's gonna be easier for women to combine work and childcare
Regardless combining career and childcare (not education and childcare). This can be an unpopular opinion nowadays, but i think if a women wants both: a baby and a top career at the same time, that is the problem right here. I think that mother is one of the most important roles in a person's life and mother should be around at least until child goes to school.
Specific measures should be adopted to help parents with young children in work-life balancing and to facilitate coming back to work after parental leaves:
Sdet-up a fund that pays for babysitter services in case of work events in the evening or on weekends outside the normal daycare hours. Specially in Liechstenstein and Switzerland babysitter services are very expensive and often hinder parent to attend such work events. A fund that each employee can use to apply for financial support would help.
If there are problems like combining the child with studying at the university, then I think that it is impossible to cope well with both of them, because the child requires constant attention and care, which is not quite compatible with studies, but if there is such a need, it is necessary to create Childcare centers that are located at or near the university, and where the children of the stu
Goals: it gives to young mothers more freetime for stadying, working etc.
Details: create small internal day kindergarden in Universities and Companies with minimal costs for workers and students.
It can give young mothers help from professionals (psycologist, nurse, doctors).
To provide special training on gender-sensitive language for staffresponsible for internal communications
Engage with the Communications Department of the Institutes or the University to develop a strategy towards supporting and advertising the existing possibilities and rights, as well as the achievements on gender equality, and encourage all staff and students to interact and be up-to-date.
Having clear and shared guidelines for a gender neutral communication that can be applied by all the different actors involved in the institutional communication services, at all levels and in all the departments/units of the university would hel
The goal of this idea is to help promote female in ISS unit. Female researchers, though not professors yet, should be promoted in the unit, and make the voice of female to be heard in the unit throught different ways.
There are female researchers in ISS unit, though no female professor yet. ISS unit should try to promote and encourgae female to participate and present in different public events at different levels, such as deparmment level, school level, university level and society level to present the voice of female in ISS.
- Extend the current set of the questions in the evaluation forms with the points like “The lecture uses gender-sensitive language” and “The examples provided by the lecture do not provoke gender stereotypes”.
Specific training of the staff members in charge of defining the contents and the style of the institutional communication is needed. Raising awareness about the importance of using a gender neutral communication is an important and necessary starting point.
Whilst giving public presentations or having events, make sure that both females and males are performing in those situations. It is not always needed that professor is on the stage, we should engourage all members of ISS to give face and voice for our unit.
The goal is to let the emotional labor work in ISS unit to go to both male and female. Currently there is no administration staff in ISS unit. Thus, the emotional labor work normally goes to differnt staff member, but mostly to female. Male staff members should be volunteers to do the emotional labor work also the same as female colleagues do.
Goal: support young women at the beginning of their career in research with dedicated training / educational activities and examples of female role models
Details: organizing dedicated specific mentoring programs including:
The idea is on creating short movies/presentations, where will narrate about women achieve certain heights due to self labor, motivation, hard work and knowledge.
It's necessary motivate women press for stated goals, growing up in a career and teach them don't scared of express self standpoints.
Pursue a policy that every employee, especially women, from their first day at work are aware that every position in the organization is equaly available for men and women. Hold meetings to raise awareness, make the information clear to the employee at their firts day briefing.
Each university should implement local active policies to encourage female researchers to lead research projects and groups. Some examples of active policies could be the following.
- Initiate a mentoring programme for female Information Systems (IS) students and doctoral candidates.
- Initiate a network of female Information Systems (IS) students and alumni.
- Incorporate such network into the existing WINet Münster network of IS alumni.
Goals: it gives to womens show themselves at the level of leaders.
Details: conducting trainings at enterprises, namely the days of self-managment, when ordinary employees changinge posts with their immediate supervisors (women with men).
It give an opportunity to solve the problem of "glass ceiling".
When searching for a new employee, make a requirement not to state applicant's sex or name in a one's CV. So when a resume is considered, it is considered only based on person's skills and qualities, never on one's gender.
The purpose of this idea is to achieve equality in the positions held.
In order to achieve the necessary result (namely, equality), I propose to make changes to the system of selecting individuals for the positions (irrespective of whether they are governing or not):
